About Savannah - History



Highlights of Savannah’s History Timeline:

 

1700’s

1733 – Savannah was founded in the British Colony of Georgia by James Oglethorpe; Ellis, Percival, Johnson, and St. James Squares were laid out

 

1739 – Tomochichi, the 17th century Creek leader who gave his land to Oglethorpe to form the town site of present-day Savannah, was buried in Percival Square

 

1754 – Savannah becomes the capital of the British Province of Georgia

 

1754 – The Pirates’ House Inn begins business

 

1755 – The Georgia legislature convened on January 1st

 

1778 – Savannah captured by British on December 29, 1778 during the First Battle of Savannah, an American Revolutionary War battle

 

1778 – Georgia’s state capital was relocated to Augusta from Savannah

 

1782 – Occupation of the British ends

 

1782 – Georgia’s state capital was once again relocated to Savannah from Augusta

 

 

 

1788 – Savannah becomes part of the US state of Georgia

 

1789 – Savannah was chartered as a city

 

1796 – The first of Savannah’s devastating fires, leaving one-half of Savannah in ashes

 

1800’s

1819 – President Monroe visits Savannah

 

1819 – The William Scarbrough residence is built

 

1820 – Savannah’s second devasting fire

 

1825 – Lafayette visits Savannah

 

1837 – Central Railroad in operation

 

1846 – Bonaventure Cemetery started

 

1847 – Fort Pulaski built

 

1850 – Customs House constructed

 

1853 – Forsyth Park plans laid out

 

1854 – Outbreak of Yellow Fever

 

1861 – Savannah Port was blockaded by US government during the Civil War

 

1861 – The Green House residence was built

 

1864 – The town of Savannah was taken by Union forces on December 22

 

1868 – The Mercer House was built

 

1886 – Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences begins

 

1887 – The Tybee-Savannah railway was built

 

1890 – Savannah State University established

 

1893 – Sea Islands hurricane occurred in August

 

1900’s

1902 – Benedictine Military School founded

 

1912 – Girl Scouts of America founded by Juliette Gordon Low

 

1929 – Savannah Airport in operation

 

1935 – Armstrong Junion College in operation

 

1935 – Mill opens at Union Bag and Paper

 

1953 – Talmadge Memorial Bridge built between Savannah & Hutchinson Island, GA

 

1955 – Historic Savannah Foundation established

 

1956 – House museum for Juliette Gordon Low opens

 

1978 – Savannah College of Art and Design established

 

1979 – Hurricane David

 

1990 – Talmadge Memorial Bridge was rebuilt (replacing the original cantilever truss bridge with a cable-stayed bridge)

 

1994 – Terminal built for Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport

 

2000’s

2005 – Abercorn Walk Shopping Center built
